Lesson:
Use the slide show to discuss the impact of Reconstruction on Texas.  Have partner groups review what they learned.  Use cold call sticks to discuss as a class. 

Note** This is about as basic a summary you can give on a pretty complex issue. I encourage you to read the link in the resources from The Handbook of Texas Online. It is lengthy, but it will help give you a starting place to research this period. I’m always personally sad to see that we had a chance to get it right…and ultimately failed. I also make the link during this lesson to the Civil Rights Movement and MLK. My students have briefly studied this in third grade without any context as to why it was happening. They are usually shocked and dismayed that it took almost exactly 100 years to sort any kind of fairness out of our system. Unfortunately, as I write this today, we are still trying to get it right.
